JotM October 2008

The Jammer of the Month for October, 2008 is Homeless J.
Buzzing rock band homeless J.’s frontman (aka, The Flash) is as well-versed in spiritual ideology as he is in 80s rock bands.  Not your typical rock front man, he has poetic yet playful lyrics drawn from stories ready for the silver screen.

It began innocently enough – in a dingy basement with high school mates – but, mates seeking the great and unpredictable Muse.  She thrust out her hand and the band has been following her through the music scene ever since – enduring childhood stardom dreams, several demos, line-up changes, marketing with radio support and a national release of “Three Seconds to Gaze” (2006) by the now defunct MCA Records, followed by an independent release "The Squeeze" (2007).

Delivering live shows with a fire beneath their performance, homeless J.’s desperate energy is contagious.  Musically, this indie space rock collaboration of Chad Van Meter (vocals/guitars), Brad Amstutz (guitar), Jonathan Hill (bass), Matt Minnick (guitar), and Dan Willig (drums) has a range of influences from the minimalist romanticism of the Cure, the optimistic energy of early U2, and the dark spirituality of Depeche Mode.  Music writer John Thompson calls the band’s sound “a torrid rush of purely original and passionately iterated music,” and “a blissful and sometimes frightening potion of adventurous instrumentation, startlingly literate sentiments, and richly woven artisanship.”

homeless J. is undeniably magnetic.  The band is like an onion, more flavorful and potent as you peel off the layers.  Though veteran musicians, they are at no loss for charisma or creativity.  Not satisfied with a predictable rock show, homeless J. always has crowd-pleasing antics up their sleeve that not only entertain but also provide a deeper understanding of the complex, poetic lyrics that are the foundation of the J.

homeless J. is currently on a hiatus from touring in order to record an independent album which is to be released this winter.

The world is ripe for the spell of homeless J.
